Class Standards
Materials Required Daily
- Loose leaf notebook with binder paper. Work turned in on paper torn from spiral notebooks will not be accepted.
- #2 pencils. You never know when you'll be taking a pop Scantron quiz.
- Pens. Blue or black preferred.
- Current textbook.
- Outside reading book. 300 pages required reading each grading period, so you should always have something to read with you.
Grading Policy
Your grade will be based on points; an essay is worth 100, a quiz 20, etc. Homework is due at the beginning of the period and may not be made up unless you have an excused absence.
Make-up
You must arrange for make-up on the day you return. Except for those students who are absent for the week, work may not be made up the last week before the grading period or after the grading period has ended.
Class Atmosphere
A very high priority for me is conducting class in an atmosphere of trust and respect. Sarcasm has no place, either from me, towards me, or towards each other. Discussions where everyone agrees tend to be boring, so I will encourage differing opinions, but I will not tolerate put-downs.
Talking about literature involves talking about ideas, and an open exchange of ideas enriches everyone. The principles of critical thinking will apply.
Due Dates
I will not accept late work unless you have an excused absence. If a conflict arises you must see me beforehand.
Homework
Writing and other assignments will be assigned often, and those that demonstrate that critical thinking and work have taken place will be stamped for a homework grade.
Weekend homework is always oustide reading.
Participation
Participation constitutes 10% of your grade. Being in class, on time, with no unexcused absences will earn you a C. To earn a higher grade you must actively participate by remaining on task, listening courteously, asking questions, clarifying points, and helping your classmates.
