2004 Year In Review

Games Played 2004, Quarter 1 (January-March)

Games Played 2004, Quarter 2 (April - June)

Games Played 2004, Quarter 3 (July - September)

Games Played 2004, Quarter 4 (October - December)

Total Games Played for 2004: 459 (466 last year)

Number of Different Games: 136 (127 last year)

Highest Total in One Month: 83 in February

Losest Total in One Month: 11 in November

Though 7 fewer games played, I played a more diverse selection of games and enjoyed (through June) a Renaissance of gaming with a couple of students who would request a game nearly every day. It spoiled me for the dearth of gamers at school this year, but oh well....

Favorite Gaming Experiences/Games:

Rather than just listing games, I thought I list the first 5 as great memories of gaming experiences over the course of the year. I've named names, but just so that I can acknowledge those who brought gaming fun into my life this past year.

1) Tahuantinsuyu with Rick Thornquist, Greg Parker, and Scott Woodard at Kublacon. After an exhausting day running the Tabletop area, having a great time late at night as we struggled through the rules and attempted to play this interesting game capped the day just right. Is it the best game I played this year? No. It's the company that matters.

2) Antiquity with Jodi Soares. Rather than stay in our game room and get involved in a multi-player, Jodi and I headed into the kitchen, spread out the wealth of bits and wandered our way through this one. Jodi's just an excellent gamer friend and playing this one was a joy.

3) Attika with Jon, Tom and Scott at KublaStaffCon. I love this game and enjoyed this playing as it was anyone's game as it came down to the wire. The 'right' play could have won the game for anyone, so it was tense, but still friendly and enjoyable.

4) Ticket to Ride at Kublacon with Guido Teuber and a bunch of other new gamers. This playing proved TtR's popularity as everyone was excited with the game and it was closely contested.

5) Kogge with Greg Parker at our Game Night, Day 2 - the 2-player contest. Greg and I sat down to a marathon session of 2-player games, ending with this gem that hurt my brain, but was excellent from start to finish.

6) Oltremare - My five playings have been mostly enjoyable, as long as the pace remains quick rather than plodding.

7) Saint Petersburg - Fun games all around, and I enjoy the change due to differing player numbers.

8) Hansa - A favorite of my wife's, I love when a game clicks for her - it means we'll play it more!

9) Santiago - Plays quickly, but with some nice tension of bidding. Since money is also VP's, you have to understand how things interconnect.

10) Einfach Genial - Great for the non-gamer, abstract-only crowd that I sometimes find myself attempting to introduce games to.

Onto the 10's & 5's:

Attika: 45 - Great game and scales well, but hasn't hit the table in a couple of months and many of these were before June.

Trendy: 36 - Quick and easy to teach, this was the chosen filler for awhile, but has slipped off the radar a bit.

Ticket to Ride: 23 - A great game and one that everyone whom I've taught it to has loved. With the new maps and such, it will continue to appeal to me, and this is now the gateway game to boardgames, supplanting Settlers and Carcassonne.

Saint Petersburg: 15 - Like Greg S. said (I think) I haven't analyzed this one to death, looking for the optimum play, and thus I still enjoy it with non-hardcore gamers.

Web of Power: 11 - Elegant and doesn't overstay its welcome

6 Nimmt! : 11 - A game that elicits groans every time it's played.

Einfach Genial: 10 - Though abstract, it's easy to teach and not too luck-based.

5+

Drahtseilakt: 9 - Relationship Tightrope is a nice new addition, but I still like this unpronouncable original.

Carolus Magnus: 8 - I went on a Colovini kick and with my 3-player group at school, this one works quite well.

San Juan: 8 - A good version of Puerto Rico's ideas, condensed. I just can't play this with hard-core gamers. Some people are just too obsessed with this one and its older brother.

Hansa: 8 - A bit dry, but the best Uberplay in my opinion.

10 Days in the USA: 7 - Loved by the secretaries at school

Die Fugger: 7 - Solid game in a tiny box. I like the BGG card additions.

Isis and Osiris: 7 - Mostly play in one week, now sits gathering dust.

Alhambra: 7 - A good game gets better with expansions.

Paris Paris: 7 - Still fun, especially with the small expansion where one has a secret goal. It means that one's optimum choice may change a bit.

Flaschenteufel: 6 - Odd and interesting, a hard game to get the brain around for first timers.

Take It Easy: 6 - Great in big groups and my wife now uses it with her 3rd graders.

Piratenbilliards: 6 - goofy fun.

Geschenkt: 6 - Simple, but a great quick game with the right people

Money: 5 - I love the beautiful denomination cards.

flowerpower: 5 - Another one loved by the secretaries and occasionally with my wife.

Yukon Company: 5 - A friend went through and painstakingly translated and recreated this game with English paste-ups. I love it and request it when we have a larger group.

Oltremare: 5 - Last one to make the 5+ list, It's one of my favorites of the past year.

Nearly Made It:

Sticheln: 4 - Classic evil trick taking

Coloretto: 4 - Substntially fewer plays than last year, but should hit the table more often now that the in-laws want to play cards with us.

Keythedral: 4 - Love this game, but can get nasty

Trias: 4 - Less enamored with this one after I learned that the nastiness is even worse since one's swimming dinos can be easily blocked

Edel, Stein & Reich: 4 - Dropped off the rader and should find its way back on

Tongiaki: 4 - OK, but not a favorite

Balloon Cup: 4 - Still a favorite, but my 2-player gaming totals went down quite a bit as my wife soured on gaming for awhile.

Santiago: 4 - Glad to see this worthy title will be getting an English edition

Palermo: 4 - An old Piatnik game that I had sitting on my shelf unplayed for over a year until Mark Jackson taught it to me at Kublacon. Now it sees occasional play.
