Games - My Newfound Passion

I have just gotten back into board games via a good friend who now thinks I've gone off the deep end. However, as a newly converted games advocate, I must say that a good game provides me (at least) with just the right amount of intellectual stimulation, group interaction and procrastination potential. Here are listings of all of my favorite games, quick write ups of ALL of the games I have played over the past couple of years, as well as some sites where you can find more information.

The Game Cake!

Tiffany, one of the women I work with at school, LOVES making cakes. So, as part of a baby shower & thank you to my service as department chair, she made this wonderful cake - a modified Monopoly board. I loved it!

Sites:

BoardsandBits:

One of the best internet game stores on the web. A fixed price for shipping makes larger game orders a good buy. They just did an update of the site and I like its layout.

Funagain Games:

This site, though a retail outlet, is the amazon.com of board games. A wealth of information can be found at the site: games are rated, suggestions are offered, and descriptions abound. Their discounts are good and their sevice is excellent. Check out the site just to see what game they suggest every day, then check out some fo the ratings of other gamers.

GameFest

A newcomer to the games scene, gamefest.com has made a rather large initial impact primarily due to the fact that Rick Thornquist's Game Wire (formerly Terminal City Gamers) updates new and important news from the world of gaming every day. Therefore, their site has become a daily 'must-visit,' leading, I'm sure, to numerous purchases. Their prices are competitive with Funagain and it will be interesting to see if both can survive in the market.

Game Surplus:

Now owned by a Spielfriek who provides great personal service, Their eastern location makes shipping to the West Coast take a bit longer, but their prices almost always beat Funagain and I can't say enough about the excellent customer service I've received.

BoardgameGeek:

It's OK to embrace your inner Geek! This site provides EXTENSIVE information about boardgames and isn't associated with a retail outlet. Gamers make suggestions, leave comments, and post information about games and how they play.

Boardgamenews.com:

NEW site with everything the boardgame-obsessed person might want to find out about new games, publishers, etc.

Yahoo.com/Spielfrieks:

The best message board I've found for gamers talking about games. Have a conversation or just read through what others are saying. Need help with a game? Here's where you should go for immediate feedback.

Mayfair Games:

One of the better game publishers in the US, their site allows you to purchase items or missing pieces/accessories. Settlers of Catan and its sequels can be found here, along with other German-style games.

Rio Grande Games:

Probably the BEST English publisher of German games. Their site includes a list of their games with inofrmation, as well as places to purchase them.

The Games Journal:

An online newsletter with interesting articles on games. The writers are experts and write well. Reviews and commentary worth reading..

Silicon Valley Boardgamers:

For those who live in and/or around Silicon Valley, this is a local gaming club that meets often and has a major event each month. Come to check out the games, then stay to play.

Westbank Gamers:

Greg J. Schloesser's EXCELLENT site includes information on tons of games, commentary, session reports, lists of suggested games to play, as well as variants and player aids. Have fun exploring his site and then send Greg an email - he's fun to talk with too!
