Literature 9
1) Students will be exposed to
elements of the novel and the short story:
| a) Plot (problem,
conflict, climax, and resolution) |
| b) Character (motivation,
character traits) |
| c) Setting |
| d) Theme |
| e) Point of View |

2) Student will be
exposed to poetry at this level primarily for appreciation and
enjoyment. However, students must be introduced to those concepts
listed bellow.
3) Students will learn the
difference between fiction and nonfiction.
4) Students will study as
a class the following literary selections: To kill A mockingbird
by Harper Lee; The Education of little tree bye forest carter;
and excerpts from the Odyssey by Homer.
5) Students will study and
be able to identify Greek and roman myths and mythological figures,
and use this knowledge to understand the origin and meaning
of new words.
6) Students will do an in-depth
study of the following; Short Stories: " The Necklace"
by de Maupassant, " The Scarlet ibis" by Hurston,"
"The secret of life of Walter Mitty" by Thurber; Poems;"
The base stealer' by Francis," a Dream Deferred' and Mother
to Son by Hughes; Historically Significant Speeches by Martin
Luther king.
7) Student will learn about
Shakespeare and his time and will read the drama Romeo and Juliet.
Students will talk about themes in the play will learn the techniques
of reading a Shakespearean drama. Student will compare and contrast
the ways in which media genres represent the same literary text,
specifically using the text of Romeo and Juliet.
8) In addition to the above
reading, students will read at least three full-length literary
works of three hundred pages or more per year.
9) Student will extend will
extend ideas presented in the listed text through analysis,
evaluation, and elaboration.
10) Student will support their
own ideas observations and analysis with specific effective
textual evidence.
11) Students will analyze
the way in which a work of literature is related to the themes
and issues of its historical period.
