COURSE DESCRIPTION   This class will expand and strengthen skills acquired in prior courses.  More stress will be placed on oral and written communication.  Students will develop an appreciation of prose and poetry, as well as a familiarity with current materials from periodicals, radio and television.  History and civilization will be part of the curriculum.  Mini-units on special topics will focus on active vocabulary building.  Students will explore and discuss representative works of French literature and cinema.  Supplementary reading will also be required.

ATTENDANCE   Regular attendance is essential to successful pursuit of a foreign language. Refer to rules and associated consequences for attendance and tardiness at Los Gatos High School.

MAKE UP WORK   It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher and to make up any work. Students must arrange to make-up missed work within two school days after their return to class following an absence.  Failure to do so will result in a zero.  If the absence is due to a school related activity, the student is expected to make up the work the next day.  There will be no make-ups for unexcused absences or tardies.

ASSIGNMENTS   Late work is not accepted.  Assignments that are not turned in as scheduled result in a zero.  Exception:  written compositions will be accepted one day late with an automatic 20% penalty.

GRADES   Students will accumulate points for homework, oral presentations and discussions, compositions, quizzes and tests.  Semester grades are determined by the two-quarter grades plus the final exam.  The final letter grade will be determined by a percentage of the total points as follows:

100 - 90 % = A

  89 - 80 % = B

  79 - 70 % = C

  69 - 60 % = D

below 60%= F
