COURSE DESCRIPTION   This is a one year college-level course for which college credit may be received.  In-depth analysis will proceed from challenging literary sources, contemporary publications, radio, television, and major cinematic works.  History, civilization and art will be part of the curriculum.  Critical thinking skills will be enhanced through active participation in discussions and demanding written assignments.  Supplementary reading is required.  Advanced placement preparation is incorporated in the class curriculum.

ATTENDANCE   Regular attendance is essential to successful pursuit of a foreign language.  Refer to rules and associated consequences for attendance and tardiness at Los Gatos High School.

MAKE UP WORK   It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher and to make up any work. Students must arrange to make-up missed work within two school days after their return to class following an absence.  Failure to do so will result in a zero.  If the absence is due to a school related activity, the student is expected to make up the work the next day.  There will be no make-ups for unexcused absences or tardies.

ASSIGNMENTS   Late work is not accepted.  Assignments that are not turned in as scheduled result in a zero.  Exception: written compositions will be accepted one day late with an automatic 20% penalty.

GRADES   Students will accumulate points for homework, oral presentations and discussions, compositions, quizzes and tests.  Semester grades are determined by the two-quarter grades plus the final exam.  The final letter grade will be determined by a percentage of the total points as follows:

100 - 90 % = A

  89 - 80 % = B

  79 - 70 % = C

  69 - 60 % = D

below 60%= F
