Community College Classes

Community colleges allow high school students to take classes through a process known as Concurrent Enrollment or Dual Enrollment. High school students do not pay tuition for the classes, but are capped at a set number of units per term.

If you are considering taking a community college class, carefully consider your objective before enrolling.  Read below for common considerations:

Potential Advantages:

  • Can explore subjects for a potential college major
  • Can take classes not offered at LGHS
  • Can earn college credit by completing the class
  • Can be used to remediate a grade of D or F in a previously taken high school class

Potential Disadvantages:

  • Entire class is offered in one semester (approx. 16 weeks), one quarter (approx. 10 weeks), or one summer session (approx. 6 weeks). These timeframes are considerably shorter than a year-long class at LGHS and may not provide the same learning experience.
  • Quality of the class content and the teacher are unknown
  • If class is taken to skip a class at LGHS, some students find they are unprepared for the next class taken at LGHS.
  • Four-year colleges may question when students accelerate through foundational classes that can be taken at their own high school
  • Grades must be reported to four-year colleges when you apply. Low grades in community college classes will impact your future college applications.

If you decide to take a community college class, follow these steps:

Step 1: Search for a class. There are "Class Schedule" links for local community colleges below.

Step 2: Speak with your LGHS school counselor if you want to take a class to meet a graduation requirement or college eligibility requirement. Your counselor may need you to submit an External Course Agreement Form, but speak with them first.

Step 3: Complete the concurrent/dual enrollment process for the community college you wish to attend. There are links for local colleges below. If you need a copy of your high school transcript, you can download an unofficial copy from your Aeries account.
